Please join us for the launch of Hazel Meyer’s DEEP HORSE TEXTS on December 9th, 2022 at 7 pm. 

DEEP HORSE TEXTS is a project about horses and the affinities we humans have with them, no matter our proximity. These affinities are varied and amorphous, expanding, contracting, and releasing, like lungs and pores. In DEEP HORSE TEXTS you will find sweaty, tender, revisionist, and political ways of being with, on, and alongside horses. 

Meyer will be joined by ma̱lidi/Mercedes Webb, Adrian Stimson, and Natasha Chaykowski for a conversation, and launch of the project’s website and publication.

DEEP HORSE TEXTS was developed by Hazel Meyer alongside the curatorial support of Natasha Chaykowski. When read left to right, DEEP HORSE TEXTS is a publication with contributions by: Cheryl Foggo, Cait McKinney, Indu Vashist, Rianka Singh, Amy Ching-Yan Lam, Elaine Miller, Adrian Stimson, Judith Ellen Brunton, Reed H. Reed, Amy Fung, Jon Davies, and Logan MacDonald. Read back to front, the publication becomes the DEEP HORSE ALMANAC, a calendar that will see you through till the end of January 2024, with contributions by: Rita McKeough, Cindy Baker, ma̱lidi / Mercedes Webb, oualie frost, Clare Chasse, Lacie Burning, Tim Flach, Whit Deschner, and HazelMeyer.

Hazel Meyer is an artist who works with installation, performance, and text to investigate the relationships between sexuality, feminism, and material culture. She presently lives and works on the stolen and unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.  

Adrian Stimson is a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in southern Alberta.  

Adrian has a BFA with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design and MFA from the University of Saskatchewan. He is an interdisciplinary artist and exhibits nationally and internationally. Adrian was awarded the Governor General Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2018. REVEAL Indigenous Arts Award –Hnatyshyn Foundation 2017. He was awarded the Blackfoot Visual Arts Award in 2009, the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005 and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003.  

MercedesWebb / ma̱lidi is a writer, vocalist and visual artist of mixed ancestry including, Haida (Kunn janaas), Kwakwaka’wakw (Mama̱liliḵa̱la), Fort William First Nation, Welsh, and Italian, living as a guest on Treaty 7 Territory. Webb’s vocals were included on the vinyl from Rita McKeough: Works, and were the recipient of the 2019 Canadian Art Writing Prize. They have their BA in Art History and Communications with Distinction from University of Calgary.

Natasha Chaykowski is a writer and curator based in Lethbridge, Alberta, on Treaty 7 Territory.
